How To Change The Oil In Volvo Xc70 2011

Oil Modify Feel in 2010 XC70
Today I successfully inverse the oil in my 2010 XC70 iii.2L - not without some difficulty. Took me about 45 minutes, only I did practice on my lemon 2009 before I gave information technology dorsum. Procedure with Cautions/Warnings:
one. Be enlightened that there is a splash shield on the bottom of the engine with viii torx screws that has to be removed to access the drain plug. If yous are trying to change the oil in your garage on the floor, get ready to get dirty. You WILL have to jack up the machine from one side to get at the center rear screw. Use a jackstand when under the car.
ii. Drain plug is Volvo standard 17mm. Be ready with a container that tin concord viii quarts of used oil when information technology comes firing out.
3. The oil filter is changed from the top. Absurd, you're thinking, this volition be easy....WRONG!! Start to go at the filter with your filter wrench (y'all bought the special one for the Volvo filter housing correct?), you have to unclip the power steering reservoir to enable your tool admission. Use ii vi inch extensions on your ratchet wrench.
iv. Now, you take the filter housing lid off, but you tin can't get it of the engine bay! As far every bit I tin tell. if yous want to go the lid out from under the hood, you volition have to bleed and remove the power steering reservoir. If you accept small hands, like me, y'all get it out of the way every bit best yous can, remove the dipstick for about i/2 inch more clearance for the filter, and yank the filter out. Replace the gasket on the chapeau by feel. Shove a new filter through and supercede the chapeau. Fountains of blood ensue. Didn't even endeavor to fill the housing with oil.
5. Put the drain plug back in and supersede the shield - all 8 torx screws. By now, you will probable be wearied, just don't forget to add almost 8 quarts of fresh oil. My 97 Camaro Z28 simply has space for 5 quarts. Not certain why Volvo wanted to give us the security of those 3 extra quarts.
6. Cleanup all the oil that you spilled.....In other words, this was the hardest vehicle I have ever inverse the oil on. Hondas are easier than this motorcar. Doing it on a elevator would aid a lot with those torx screws.

Wow, I've never changed oil on my cars, but that sounds like a heck of a job! Hats off to y'all for doing it. I hate cars designed in such a way where admission for regular maintenance is a PITA...

That is adept advice from Nuke. Only to add a few points though. Yous have to unclip the power steering reservoir and shove it out of the way. You do non have to drain the reservoir of oil. Be careful though the p/s hose can put a tug on the sensor wire for the "engine hood open up" message. I recommend unplugging that sensor. I used a 36mm socket to remove the oil filter housing cover. I was able to sneak my easily in and I slid the oil filter cartridge off the cover and then removed the oil filter separately. I agree information technology is needlessly a messy job. Be certain when tightening the oil filter embrace, refer to the tightening torque printed on the cover. Use gloves to prevent the oil from getting on your pare. Doing an oil modify on this car is certainly more than difficult that previous Volvos that I have owned, simply, I still get a scrap of satisfaction in doing information technology myself, and knowing it was done correctly. I worry about having the dealer doing this service, charging a lot of money, and then the technician not bothering to change the filter.

I've since changed the oil in my 2010 two more times and while information technology goes faster, it's still pretty difficult. Gloves aid. I nonetheless can't get the oil filter top out even if I unclip the ability steering reservoir; possibly information technology'due south only my automobile. I've also been able to go the bottom splash shield off without using a jackstand (I lost a few pounds!).

You guys did get the give-and-take that the oil filter vessel drains when you unscrew the cap nearly 1/2 inch or more than. Unscrew the cap first and let it drain earlier you become underneath to drain oil.

The iii xetra quarts extend the oil change interval.
Anyone endeavor pumping the old oil out through the dipstick tube?

I simply completed my outset oil change on a 3.2l. Could not get the cap out and so I changed the filter and 0-ring while even so under the PS reservoir.
I wonder how many grease monkeys neglect to change the filter.
This inline half dozen cylinder engine was designed for lateral front end wheel drive. Guess the oil filter service was not high priority. Fourth dimension is nonetheless money and there is no way to do this chop-chop. Why was the the diameter of the housing designed so much larger than the filter?
If yous intend to do an oil modify I suggest yous insure you can go the filter cap loose before y'all start. My cap was and then tight I had to use a 'T' bar to loosen it.

Just did the XC today (every 10k miles with Mobil 1). I lost the clip on the PS reservoir a while ago and so I but slip it upward and twist it to the front and correct - the hoses take enough play (and they're merely prophylactic) that it gives complete admission to the oil filter housing. No problem removing the housing and replacing the filter and o-band. I too utilise a T-handle, sometimes with an additional extension. I utilise ramps for some extra clearance under the machine.
I agree that it'south a PITA design with the filter, but I will never let some monkey change my oil while I am still physically able to. I become satisfaction from doing it myself and I know it was done correctly!
